Ans:- “Shining loads” are the multicoloured glass bangles that are being carried by the bangle sellers to the temple fair which refers to the hardships of the bangle sellers. Its prospective buyers are happy daughters and happy wifes.

(ii) Bangle sellers could sell their goods anywhere. Why do they choose to go to the temple fair?

​

Ans:- Temple fair attract females of all age group. When they go there they get attracted and buy the delicate bright and multi-coloured bangles which are of symbolic and religious importance and their colour representing the various stages in the life of a woman.

(iii) Which figure of speech is used in the line," rainbow tinted circles of light".Explain what is linked to the happiness of daughters and wives.

Ans:- The figure of speech used in the Line, "Rainbow tinted circles of light" is metaphor. The multihued bangles are symbolic of different shades of womanhood and also of the radiant lives of "happy daughters and Happy wives".

(iv)Explain how the poet uses her descriptive skills to present facts. Give two examples from the extract.

Ans:- The poet describe the beauty of multihued bangles by comparing it wit the rainbow and to the brightness of the bangles with the happy and radiant lives of happy daughters and happy wives. E.g. -“ Rainbow tinted circles of light” and lustrous tokens of radiant lives, foe happy daughters and happy wives.
 
(v) What role do the bangle seller play in a traditional Indian set-up according to this extract?

Ans:- The bangle sellers play the role of convincing the buyers of different age group of women of the spiritual importance of her glass bangles in a traditional Indian setup and the role played by the different coloured bangles is imparting happiness to young maidens, brides, wives and mothers.
 

2.(i) What type of bangles are befitting for a maiden’s wrist ? Why are silver and blue colours compared to the mountain mist?

Ans:- Silver and blue coloured bangles whch are like the mist of a mountain will suit a maiden’s wrist. This suggests the blooming beauty of her growing age. Some of the bangles are like the buds that are going to blomm in a woodland stream, while some are the glowing flowers that add to the glory of “New born leaves”.

(ii) In what way are the buds set to dream? What figure of speech is used in “The buds set to dream”?

Ans:- “the buds set to dream” Suggests the blooming beauty of a maiden’s growing age. Some bangles are likened to the flushing (pinkish) buds that seem to be sleeping on the banks of a woodland stream. Figure of speech used in the line is Imagery.

(iii) Give the meaning of : 

     Some are flushed like the buds that dream
     On the tranquil brow of a woodland stream,

Ans:-The bangle sellers  says that they carry different kinds of bangles, each catering to different types of women with different needs and preferences. He describes the bangles which are of reddish hue like the flushed buds found along a stream suggests the beauty of a young girl in her prime.

(iv)  How are the bangles compared to the new born leaves?

​

Ans:-The bangle seller says that there are some bangles which are like the glowing flowers that add to the transparent glory of new born leaves which symbolizes the freshness and beauty of young maidens.

(v) state the colours of the bangles meant for a maiden. What do these colours symbolise ?

Ans:- The colours of the bangles for a maiden are the blue and silver like the mist in the mountains, some bangles are of reddish hue like the flushed buds found along a stream. Some of the bangles glow like new born leaves owing to the dew and water from stream.

3.(i) What is being compared to “fields of sunlit corn”? Why?

Ans:- The golden coloured bangles are being compared to the fields of sunlit corn which suit the newly weded bride on the bridal morning. The productivity of the fields of sunlit corn symbolizes “the fertility of the newly married brides”.

(ii) What do you understand by the phrases “Bridal laughter” and “Bridal tear”? With what have they been compared in the extract ?

Ans:- The phrase “Bridal laughter” refers to the hopes, desires,dreams and aspirations of a newly wedded bride and “Bridal tear refers to the sadness and the poem of the bride as she is going to leave her parental abode. They have been compared to the yellow colour of marriage fire and the bright red colour of the heart’s desires  of a newly wedded bride.

(iii) which figure of speech is used in these two lines? Explain with examples.

     Some,like the flame of her marriage fire,
     Or, rich with the hue of her hearts desire

Ans:- The figure of speech used in these two lines is Simile as the golden red bangles are compared here with the golden yellow colour of the sacred life of marriage and the bright red colour is suggestive of the hopes , dreams and aspiration of a newly wedded bride.

(iv)  Bring out the relevance of the line :

       Some,like the flame of her marriage fire,

Ans:- The bangle sellers says that golden red colour bring suit the newly wedded bride as it symbolizes the colour of the holy married fire around which the married couples take marriage vows with the groom.

(v) Weddings become befitting occasions to wear bangles. In what ways does the poet associate bangles with a bride?

Ans:- Weddings become befitted occasions to wear bangles. Sarojini Naidu associates bangles with a bride by comparing the tinkling sound of the bangles to a young bride’s laughter and luminosity of bangles to the tears.
 

4.(i) For whom are the "Purple and gold flecked grey" bangles suitable for ? Which phase of their lives is symbolised by these bangles ?

Ans:- "Purple and gold flecked grey" bangles are suitable for a woman "who has journeyed through life midway". These bangles symbolises the women who after cherishing maidenhood, bridehood and motherhood has gained maturity, rared all her children with love and at last has achieved the fullness of her role as a maiden, wife and mother.

(ii) Discuss the use of colour imagery  in the above extract.

​

Ans:- The most prominent imagery in this poem is visual imagery presented by the use of colour imagery which focus on our senses and the colour represents various moods and aspects of life. Purple is a colour which indicates power, authority and dignity and gold flecked grey is more of a sober colour which experience and wisdom. Thus, the poet wants to say that a woman wearing purple bangles has gained maturity, reared all her children with love and has achieved the fullness of her role as wife and mother.

(iii) Explain briefly the following lines:
          "Whose hands have cherished, love has blest ,
            And cradled fair sons on her faithful breast,"

​

Ans:- These lines refer to woman wearing purple and gold flecked grey bangles. Purple colour represents power and authority while gold flecked grey colour represents authority and wisdom gained with age. These Women have cherished maidenhood, bridehood and motherhood, the three phases of womanhood which symbolises the fullness of her role as a maiden, wife and mother.

(iv) What special significance does the phrase "faithful pride" hold in the above extract?

​

Ans:- In the above extract, the poet says that the maiden turned bride has now experienced all the aspects of being a woman from a dreamy maiden to an excited bride and finally to a mature matriarch and therefore feels proud of achieving her role as wife and mother. She also share equal responsibility  with her partner in the maintainance of family relationship.

(v) Comment on the changes in the life of a woman vis-a-vis the colour of her banles.

​

Ans:- The blue and silver coloured bangles like the blue and silver mist of the mountains; shades of pink of yet to blossom flowers or the clear dew drops on new born leaves. These colours are symbolic of freshness and the beauty of young maidens. The bangles that are suitable for a bride are golden coloured. The colour of "her heart's desire", i.e., red colour is suggestive of dreams and hopes of a newly wedded bride. The golden coloured bangles are also symbolic of the fertility of a young girl getting married. "Purple and gold flecked grey" bangles are suitable for a woman "who has journed through life midway".
